Supercarmovies captures Maserati MC12 Record

We reported a couple of weeks back on the supercar shootout at the Nürburgring. Therein a homologated Maserati MC12 set the lap record for unmodified production road cars after a head-to-head comparison with a Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, Pagani Zonda and Koeningsegg CCX—all owned by the same dude. The testers took great pains to ensure fairness and invited a small media contingent to witness the test. One of those, we now know, was Supercarmovies, the producer slash web host of very slick high-def short films on, well, supercars. You’ll know the name from our March rave about their LP640 video.

Anyway, they’ve posted the first two parts of “Nürburgring Supertest.” Part One is the setup, of course, and Part Two is about the Enzo’s shakedown lap. It’s compelling and all, but the second part is mostly one long in-car shot of the seven and a half minute lap. While we are fans of the uninterrupted POV (point-of-view shot), it isn’t a strong narrative device. And so the drama onboard the Enzo isn’t elevated to the level it could be.

We surmise the producers would have preferred it another way but for two issues. First, covering any event comprehensively on a 13-mile racetrack isn’t going to happen on a web-video budget. Indeed, F1 surely gave up on the place years ago in part because of TV challenges. The vast external environment doesn’t explain why we see no shot variety inside the car at speed, though. We suspect a technical problem is to blame here. Indeed, what seems to be a dash-mounted camera appears prominently in the fixed over-the-shoulder shot. That the editor never cuts to it is a sign it may not have been working properly on that lap.

All of that aside, both videos are worth a visit to the Supercarmovies website. Here’s hoping they release the MC12 episode soon. We’ll let you know when they do.
